Begerin Island

County Wexford

St Ibar founded the monastery on this once a tidal island in Wexford Harbour in early 5C. ’Beg erin’ means ‘little Ireland’. There is a 13C Church here and 2 9/10C Cross Slabs, one in NMI, the other in Enniscorthy Museum. Ibar is said to be buried on the island

This area was named by the 2C Greek geographer Ptolemy as ‘Menapia’. This indicates that it was settled by a people who had once lived in Belgium.
