Lismore

County Waterford

St Mochuta (Carthach) (636) founded a monastery here. A Cross and 4 9C Grave Slabs are fastened on W wall of the Church of Ireland Cathedral. No 2 might be the Grave Slab of Suibne, hermit and abbot of Lismore d.855. No 3 of Martin, abbot of Lismore d.878 . On one slab there appears to be the figure of Christ holding an open Gospel There is a replica of St Mochuta's crozier dating from the 12C. It was discovered in 1814 hidden in the castle walls. The original is now in the National Museum.
