Coargh Beg

County Kerry (Iveragh Peninsula)

St Brendan is associated with this site, which is not surprising as the great Atlantic is but 400m away. It lies on the western end of Valentia Island in the middle of Emlagh Bog; indeed it stands on a trackway across the bog. There is a Holy Well dedicated to the Saint, and a large stone cross and 3 other stone crosses. There is perhaps an ancient leacht (open altar) on site. There is a new altar on top of the holy well which was rebuilt in 1984. Rounds are still performed here.
