St Macdara’s Island

County Galway

St Macdara (6C) founded a monastery on the island and the stunning church is one of those few intact buildings in Ireland. Although this stone church probably belongs to the 10C it is modelled exactly on its wooden predecessor.
It is so small it must surely be a tomb shrine for its founder. There is an enclosure round about and several Cross Slabs dotted about. Otherwise there is only the sheep and complete silence.
