St Colman mac Duagh, the hermit of Keehilla (qv), founded the monastery which became a monastic city complete with cathedral and many churches. The cathedral, which has seen changes from the 9C to the 15C, is built on the site of a 7C church. The 2 figure carvings inside are post mediaeval folk art. There is St Mary’s church by the road and that of St John the Baptist (11C) in a field near the cathedral and churches and buildings connected with the Abbey – the Abbot’s house and the Heyne’s church (13C). Kilmacduagh became a diocese in the 12C There is St Colman’s church just outside the graveyard to the SW. St Colman is said to be buried here. The Round Tower is the tallest in Ireland and has a distinctive lean of some 2 feet. It has also been set on fire. St Colman’s crozier is in the National Museum.
