Killeany

County Galway

The Oratory goes back to the 9C with an original small window but has additions. A large Grave Slab is incorporated in the wall, probably the grave of someone important. On it is an inscription ‘Pray for Scandlan’. Another Grave Slab is now incorporated in the altar and the inscription around the cross on it runs ‘The Blessing of God on the soul of Sanctan’. Other Cross Slabs or Grave markers are built into the altar and wall. There are 3 pieces of a High Cross cemented together also – the Cross was also smashed by Cromwell’s men.

There is the stump of a Round Tower, the stump of a High Cross and a Holy Well with an altar outside it.
