Cleggan

Connemara, County Galway

St Ceannannagh is said to have been beheaded by a pagan chief, picked up his head and taken it to wash at this holy well before he lay down and died.

A ‘nice’ story and one which contradicts the accepted view there were no early martyrs in Ireland. It has to be said that the word Cleggan, meaning ‘head’ refers to the nearby headland but legend offers us this alternative.
