Gougane Barra

County Cork

St Finbar (6C) (Barra in Irish) founded a monastery here on an island in the lake. The present ruins are late (1700) from times under the Penal Laws, when, due to its remoteness, it was much favoured by Catholics. There is a Holy Well and Holy Tree. The church is 19C.
