Clear Island

County Cork

St Ciaran (458?) founded a monastery on the island of which he was a native. He went abroad for training and settled as a hermit here. This was probably before the time of St Patrick. There is a 12C church, a Holy Well and a Pillar Stone (‘gallan’).

OS 88 954 218 marked

On the island there is also a Cross Slab at Lissamona OS 88 964222

Another is a cross inscribed on an ancient stone (gallan) at Ballyieragh North OS 88 951 212 both marked
