St Cronan (6C) founded a monastery here. The church is probably the oldest church in Ireland in terms of continuous use. There is a splendid lintelled doorway through which the High King of Ireland Brian Boru is said to have entered. The church was probably rebuilt in the 10C. OS 58 637 830 marked In a garden not far away is a huge standing stone which probably delineated the monastery boundary (marked) Further down the road to Galway is the well of St Coelan.
